Happy National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!

I’m not usually one to get excited for food holidays since there are so many random ones, but it’s hard not to take notice when an entire day is dedicated to such an iconic dessert. I’ll admit to scarfing my fair share of the original Toll House recipe when I was a kid, but chocolate chip cookies have come a long way since then. If you’re hankering for a vegan version that’s bursting with chocolatey nostalgia, check out these recipes from around the web and get to baking!

(Since this is a dessert-centric holiday, I pretty much looked the other way health-wise when doing this roundup. Some use oil, some use a lot of oil, and some have no oil at all-and every single one of them looks delicious!)

Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

These recipes follow the tried-and-true chocolate chip formula to satisfy the kid in you.

The Best Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies Ever apparently come from Atiliay. It’s a super-classic recipe, pretty much the vegan version of Toll House, that will have your taste buds dancing the way they did when Mom whipped up a batch for your 5-year-old self.

These Low-Fat Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies from Veg Kitchen use applesauce and whole wheat pastry flour for a healthier take on the standard recipe.

I’ve never had success with applesauce in cookies, but I do trust Nava Atlas’ judgment when it comes to food!

The Frosted Vegan uses date paste instead of oil in her No Oil Double Chocolate Chip Cookies. I first came across the concept of date paste as a sweetener, not an oil replacer, in Chef AJ’s book, but I have used prune puree in baked goods before. I’d imagine the concept is the same.

Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

No gluten? No problem! These treats are just as tasty as their wheat-y cousins.

The Vegan Richa offers two options for cookie lovers who need to avoid gluten: Gluten Free Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies made with oat and almond flours, and No Bake Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bars for when you want something fudgy and don’t feel like heating up the oven.

Angela Liddon of Oh She Glows experimented with different combinations to come up with her Vegan and Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies. Her description of a “crispy yet chewy” cookie with a “buttery” flavor from almond flour makes me want to rush off to the kitchen and make some right now!

Chocolate Chip Cookies with a Twist

These unusual takes on standard chocolate chip cookies are just what you need when you want something a bit exotic.

If you’re like me and think there’s no such thing as too much curry, try these Curried Chocolate Chip Cookies from Engrained. Just be careful about what kind of curry powder that you use-it’s easy to go overboard and wind up with cookies that are too spicy to eat!

These Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies on RecipeLion aren’t vegan but can easily be made that way using Earth Balance and a flax egg. Because who can resist the delicious moist texture that summer squashes add to baked goods?

The Cookie Writer takes hiding vegetables in your baked goods to another level with Sweet Potato Chocolate Chip Cookies. This oil-free recipe is just one in a series of oddball cookie remakes and uses a unique combination of mashed sweet potato, peanut butter and oats to create a cookie that’s actually quite healthy!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Oatmeal Cookies from Amy’s Healthy Baking are pretty straightforward: chocolate chip cookies with a bit of mashed banana mixed in! They’re vegan if you use coconut oil and can be made gluten free as well.

These Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites from Natural Chow feature a chickpea “dough” center and a generous coating of chocolate for a treat that’s more like a truffle than a cookie.

I’ll wrap up with Dandy Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars, a classic from the QV recipe vault. It’s a riff on a recipe for “blizzard cookies” that we made in 7th grade Home Economics class: standard cookie batter with chocolate chips, walnuts and marshmallows. Thanks to Dandies, they’re 100% vegan and 100% delicious!
